Calculate the Optimum Viewing distance to your TV

While most of us will go for the largest TV size we can afford, you really should take other factors into account.  The number 1 consideration is distance from your main viewing point to your TV.  The rule of thumb is 3 times the screen width to your viewing point.  However since the advent of HDTV you should take the picture quality into account.

If you sit too close to your screen you will see every flaw in the picture.  In the case of large Plasma or LCD’s, by sitting too close you will see the pixel makeup of the TV.  Likewise if you sit too close to an analogue signal you will see any flaws in the transmission.  Below you will see a diagram of suggested viewing distances.

Meters from TV TV Screen Size
4m + 50" +
3m to 5.5m 46" to 50"
2.5m to 4.7m 37" to 42"
1.7m to 3.5m 26" to 32"

The screen should be at a height where your eyes are looking at the middle of your screen.  A good quality stand is the best option here, don’t just go for a piece of furniture that looks good, consider the height of your seating.

Finally lighting, try not to have direct light behind or above your TV.  Try not to put your TV looking at West facing windows, this will produce afternoon/evening glare.  Most screens will work best with some natural light on them, but direct sunlight will result in your eyes straining to cope with the changing light intensity.
